Central Junior High Teachers Visit Gettysburg
Rusty Anderson

This summer, Central Junior High teachers Brant Hagen and Jarred Turner attended the Gilder Lehrman Teachers Symposium in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The event took place July 13-16 at Gettysburg College and was attended by teachers from all around the country.

They were fortunate enough to study under Dr. Caroline Winterer, the history department chair at Stanford University. Mr. Hagen and Mr. Turner not only worked closely with Dr. Winterer but also explored the historic battlefields over the course of the symposium. Brant and Jarred were also granted special access to Neill Avenue - a part of the battlefield closed off to the public and surrounded by private property.

I have a history video series called Monumental History available on TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, so we were allowed to film and explore an area most visitors and educators never get to see. -Jarred Turner, Central JH

These teachers chose to spend their summer learning because it offers an opportunity to learn from fellow educators from around the country, providing invaluable insight into what happened at these events. Turner said, "This type of experience greatly increases our classroom teaching, which is great for us and the students. It is my hope that more educators can take advantage of opportunities [that] improve what we do in the classroom."
